During Winter months, it’s vital to keep your home and family protected from the elements. This means not only wrapping up warm but ensuring that your home is prepared for the more extreme weathers we can experience. The weather in Scotland can be somewhat unpredictable and at times, very inconvenient but if your home is protected you may even grow fond of our wild weathers!

See if you’re eligible for a Winter Fuel Payment

If you were born on or before 5th November 1953, you are eligible for a tax-free Winter Fuel Payment. This means that you can be given anything between £100 to £300 from the government towards your energy bills.

Most payments are made automatically between November and December. You should get your money by Christmas.

You usually get a Winter Fuel Payment automatically if you get the State Pension or another social security benefit (not Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, Child Benefit or Universal Credit).

Clear out your garden

Remember Oh My God, Trampoline? Funny as it was, the video serves as an example of just how dramatic the winds can get in our corner of the world. If a trampoline can be moved, your small garden ornaments have no chance!

Ensure that all of your garden ornaments are tidied away before winds start to pick up and ensure that your neighbours know to move theirs too – you don’t want your home to be in the firing line for their ornaments, either!

Check your roof for wobbly or old tiles

One of the dangers your home may be in is an unsteady roof. This includes old, cracked, broken roof tiles. Initially, they may not seem like much of a huge inconvenience but realistically, it doesn’t take much for these issues to go from a minor problem to an emergency roofing situation for your property.

At Evana Roofing, we offer roof repair services for your home or business and we can fix any issues your roof may have. Feel free to get in touch with us to ensure any roofing issues – big or small – are seen to before they become an emergency.

Have your heating appliances inspected

It’s not just the cold itself that can causes issues for you and your home. Some of the heating appliances you use to warm up from the cold, if fitted incorrectly, can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide poisoning is called The Silent Killer for a reason. Ensure that your electrical appliances have been recently inspected and that you have a carbon monoxide detector fitted.

Check Your Home Security System (Or Get One)

With the long, dark nights offering cover for thieves it is no surprise to see that winter is a dangerous time of year for your home. A house alarm will help you sleep more soundly at night. Just make sure it is well maintained and serviced regularly to ensure it is in perfect working order. Modern systems also offer additional protection and can be accessed remotely on your mobile device so you can check your home from wherever you are.
