What is your roof made of?
Glasgow Roofers, Evana Roofing, are here to help you build, maintain and restore your roof but we also believe it’s vital that you understand the kind of roof that you have on your home. We believe that this can help you preserve it for years to come, minimising on stress for your and your family as well as repairing costs, in the long run.
While you may be familiar with your roof, you may not have a full understanding of which materials are used to keep it sturdy, effective and reliable even in harsh, Scottish weathers. We believe that a better understanding of the materials used will lead to a better understanding of what’s needed to maintain your roof.
Always ensure that you have enough information on any roofing problems your kind of roof can face and also, whenever you do realise you have a roofing problem, tackle it there and then by getting in touch with a qualified roofer. Roofing problems only get worse if left untreated and this leads to more stress and more costs!
There are many different roofing materials used for a range of different properties. Some materials, for example, are far more widely used on commercial properties than residential and vice versa. We’d like to cover some of the more popular roofing options and their characteristics.
Shingle roofs are more popular on residential structures than commercial. They are cost-efficient and made of durable materials. They have a base mat of paper, cellulose, wood fibre or different materials that are saturated with asphalt to make them waterproof. They’re then coated with adhesive asphalt and ceramic granules are then embedded.
Thermoplastic Polyolefin roofing
Thermoplastic Polyolefin are blends or alloys of polypropylene plastic or polypropylene and ethylene propylene rubber (abbreviated to EPR) or ethylene propylene diene terpolymer rubber (abbreviated to EPDM). These incredibly durable membranes come in several thicknesses which is why they’re an appealing option that is common on commercial roofs and also used on residential roofs that have little to no slope.
EPDM- This synthetic rubber roofing membrane has ethylene and propylene as two primary primary ingredients are derived from oil and natural gas. As it stands, EPDM is slowly being replaced by TPO membrane roofs.
Primarily made of steel or aluminium, metal roofs have repeatedly proven to stand the test of time. Also, in more specialised architectural applications for homes, you can find copper, zinc and titanium. Although metal roofing does tend to be a little more costly than other roofing materials it is widely considered to be the strongest, most durable roofing material and because of this, the most reliable roofing option.
PVC is an ideal long-term roofing solution. PVC roofing membrane is made of thick, flexible UV-resistant thermoplastic material. It sometimes can also contain polyester or fibreglass, resins, pigments, plasticisers and other chemicals. PVC roofing is most commonly used on commercial buildings.
Composite or synthetic roofing
As a more affordable, environmentally friendly, sturdy, energy efficient substitute for tiled roofs, composite or synthetic roofs are a popular choice. This is due to their many qualities that rate stronger than their authentic counterparts and the fact that they are virtually indistinguishable from the real thing
Modified Bitumen Roofing
Modified Bitumen systems can be installed with the common torch method, asphalts, or cold adhesives. A standard modified bitumen roof system tends to be a two-ply system applied in rolls that overlap the edge of the previous roll. These tend to be used on flat surfaces.
Slate roofs have unique and beautiful appearances. They’re a popular choice here in Scotland as they are one of the longest lasting roofing materials on the market and they’re extremely durable even in harsh weathers.
Slate roofs are not always the easiest to maintain but with such great quality, the pay off is always worth it with slate roofs.
